It takes 99 tries for Chase Elliott to finally get it right, and lock himself into the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. Elliott led a race high 52 laps and held off Martin Truex Jr over the closing laps to pick up his first career win at Watkins Glen. Truex forced both drivers to push hard on the final lap, sliding around in the run-off area at the
bottom of turn one. However the 78 car ran out of gas two corners from the end, allowing Elliott to win by more than seven seconds. Elliott following in the footsteps of his hall of fame Father Bill, as both finished second eight times before earning their first wins.
